The route
The trail climbs steeply out of Gangotri along the Kedar Ganga gorge. The first day to Bhoj Kharak (about 3,800 m) passes the narrow, exposed section often called Spider Wall, where care is essential. Day two climbs to Kedar Kharak (about 4,350 m), an open meadow camp. The final push crosses moraine to Kedartal, where Thalay Sagar is reflected in the lake on a still morning. Most groups return by the same route.
Is Kedartal right for you?
Kedartal gains height very fast - from 3,100 m to about 4,750 m in two to three days - and has loose, steep sections. It suits fit trekkers with some high-altitude experience. First-timers are better off starting with the Gaumukh trek or Dayara Bugyal.
Permits and guides
Kedartal lies in protected forest and needs a permit from the forest department, which trekking operators usually arrange. There are no lodges on the route, so you will need tents, food and a local guide or registered operator.
Acclimatise in Harsil
Coming straight from the plains to Gangotri and then climbing is the main cause of altitude sickness on this trek. Two nights in Harsil before you start, with an easy walk such as Sattal, makes a real difference. Harsil is also a comfortable place to recover afterwards.
What to carry
- Warm layers rated for sub-zero nights, waterproof jacket, gloves and cap.
- Trekking boots with good grip, poles for the steep descent.
