The route
From Uttarkashi a road runs up the Assi Ganga valley to Sangamchatti and on to Agoda, the last village and the usual starting point. The trail climbs steadily through village fields and then thick forest to the camp at Bebra or Manjhi, and on the next day reaches Dodital, a clear green lake ringed by forest with a small temple to Ganesha on its shore. Most groups spend a night at the lake and return the same way, or continue to Darwa Pass.
Why Dodital is special
- Faith: local tradition holds this is where Ganesha was born, and a small temple stands on the shore.
- Forest: one of the most beautiful forest trails in Garhwal, red with rhododendron in spring.
- Gentle: a good first Himalayan trek for fit beginners and families with older children.
Permits and guides
The trail passes through forest land, and forest entry rules and fees change. Check the current requirement with the forest office in Uttarkashi or go with a registered trekking operator, who will usually arrange it. Hire a local guide if you are not experienced; the upper trail can be confusing in snow.
Fitting Dodital into a Harsil trip
Dodital starts near Uttarkashi, on the road to Harsil, so it pairs well with a few days in the Harsil valley. Do the trek on the way up, then rest in Harsil before Gangotri - or start in Harsil and finish with Dodital on the way down. See Uttarkashi on the way to Harsil and Delhi to Harsil by road.
What to carry
- Warm layers - nights at the lake are cold even in May.
- Rain shell and sturdy shoes; the forest trail is muddy after rain.
- Water purification, snacks, torch, cash and ID.
Before or after the trek, rest in a warm room at Harsil Village Resort. For higher, harder treks from this valley, see Kedartal and Gaumukh.
