Sattal (Saat Taal, "seven lakes") is a string of small lakes in the deodar and oak forest above Dharali, up the road from Harsil. There is no road to the lakes themselves: you drive to Dharali and walk up. It is the easiest real walk in the valley and a good first day while you get used to the altitude.
What it is like
Do not picture big alpine lakes. These are quiet forest pools, some no more than ponds, strung one above the other along the trail. The walk is the point - shade, birdsong, glimpses of the peaks through the trees - and the lakes are where you stop and sit.
The walk
From Dharali the trail climbs steadily for roughly 3 to 5 km depending on how many of the lakes you go up to. Most people take two to three hours up and a little less down. It is easy to moderate: no exposure or scrambling, but it is uphill at well over 2,500 m, so go slowly.
The permit
Walks in the Harsil forests need a forest permit. Apply online on the Uttarkashi Single Window portal before you come, and carry the permit and ID. Ask us when you book and we will tell you what is current that season.
Planning the day
- Start after breakfast; you will be back for a late lunch.
- Carry water, a warm layer and something to eat - there is nothing on the trail.
- After rain the path is slippery. Proper shoes, not sandals.
- Pair it with a slow afternoon in the orchard, or Mukhba in the evening.
