There is one road to Harsil. It runs from Rishikesh up the Bhagirathi through Uttarkashi, and it carries on past Harsil to Gangotri. Everything below is a variation on that single line.
The distances
- Dehradun to Harsil - roughly 220 km. Allow a full day.
- Rishikesh to Harsil - roughly 250 km via Uttarkashi.
- Uttarkashi to Harsil - roughly 73 km, and the slowest stretch of the lot.
- Harsil to Gangotri - 25 km, about an hour when the road is clear.
- Delhi to Harsil - roughly 480 km, 12-14 hours of driving; best over two days. See Delhi to Harsil by road.
- Haridwar to Harsil - roughly 275 km, through Rishikesh.
- Chandigarh to Harsil - roughly 390 km via Paonta Sahib and Dehradun; plan two days.
Do not plan by distance. Hill roads here average well under 30 km/h once you are past Uttarkashi, and a single stopped truck can hold a section for an hour.
By air
Jolly Grant (Dehradun) is the nearest airport, about 20 km from Rishikesh. Fly in the morning and drive the same day if you must, but you will arrive after dark. Better: fly in, sleep in Uttarkashi, and do the last leg fresh.
By train
Rishikesh and Haridwar are the practical railheads. Both put you at the bottom of the same road.
By road, honestly
Break the journey. Rishikesh or Dehradun to Uttarkashi is a comfortable first day; Uttarkashi to Harsil is a half day that leaves you arriving in daylight. Driving the whole way in one go is possible and almost always a mistake, because the last two hours are the ones you want to be alert for.
Shared jeeps and buses run from Uttarkashi towards Gangotri in season and will drop at Harsil. They leave early - ask the night before, not the morning of.
Driving yourself
Any car with reasonable ground clearance will do it in fair weather. Fill up at Uttarkashi; assume nothing beyond it. Start early enough that you are off the road before dusk, and do not attempt the last stretch in heavy rain.
