Short answer: Darwa Pass (about 4,150 m) is the high point above Dodital lake, about 5 km and roughly 3 hours' climb from the lake. From the top you see Bandarpoonch, Srikanth and the Gangotri and Yamunotri ranges. Most trekkers do it as a day climb from Dodital and return, making a 5-6 day trip from Agoda; experienced groups cross over towards Hanuman Chatti on the Yamunotri side. Best in May-June and September-October.

The climb
From Dodital the trail follows the Assi Ganga's source stream up through the last of the forest and onto open meadows. The final section is steep and can hold snow well into May. Start early: the views are clearest in the morning, and cloud often builds by midday. Allow most of the day for the climb and return to Dodital.
What you see from the top
On a clear morning the pass opens onto a long line of snow peaks, with Bandarpoonch the most prominent, along with Srikanth and Black Peak. Below lie the meadows that lead towards the Yamunotri valley.
Crossing to Hanuman Chatti
An old route continues over the pass and down towards Hanuman Chatti, near Yamunotri, linking the Bhagirathi and Yamuna sides. It is longer, remote and best done with an experienced guide and full camping support. Most trekkers return via Dodital.
Who should do it
Darwa Pass suits fit trekkers who have done Dodital or a similar trek. The climb to over 4,000 m means acclimatisation matters - spend a night at Dodital before the pass, and ideally a night or two at moderate altitude before starting. A few days in Harsil (2,620 m) works well, either before the trek or to rest afterwards.
What to carry
- Warm layers, windproof jacket, gloves and cap.
- Good boots with grip for snow and wet grass.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen - the light is strong at the top.
- Water and a packed lunch from camp.
Plan your rest days in the valley at Harsil Village Resort. More treks from here: Kedartal, Gaumukh and Dayara Bugyal.
