Short answer: For most pilgrims and travellers, Harsil is the best place to stay for Gangotri. It is 25 km (about an hour) below the temple, has a wider choice of rooms than Gangotri town, sits lower at 2,620 m so it is easier to sleep at, and is a destination in its own right. Stay in Gangotri itself only if you want to be at the temple for the first aarti; stay in Uttarkashi only as a halt on the way up.

Why Harsil is the best base for Gangotri
- Close but not crowded. An early start gets you to the temple before the queues, and you are back for lunch.
- Easier altitude. Sleeping at 2,620 m rather than 3,100 m is kinder on the first night, especially for older pilgrims and children.
- Better rooms. Heating, hot water and proper food are easier to find here than in the temple town.
- More to do. Mukhba, where the goddess winters, is across the river; Gartang Gali and Nelong valley are a short drive.
When to stay in Gangotri instead
If you are starting the Gaumukh trek early in the morning, or want to attend the first aarti, a night in Gangotri makes sense. Book early in May and June - rooms are limited and simple.
When Uttarkashi makes sense
Uttarkashi is the right overnight halt on the way up from Rishikesh or Dehradun, so you do the last 73 km to Harsil fresh and in daylight. It is too far for a comfortable day trip to Gangotri.
How many nights?
Two nights in Harsil is the minimum for a relaxed Gangotri visit: one day for the temple, one for the valley. Three nights lets you add a walk or Gartang Gali. See the 3-day Harsil itinerary.
