Not an agency, not a booking site with a commission folded into the rate. Harsil Village Resort is a small, family-run place in the orchard on the valley floor, and the person who answers your enquiry is the person who will hand you the room key.
Why Harsil, and only Harsil
Because a valley is a subject you can actually know. Harsil sits at 2,620 metres in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, on the single road that runs up the Bhagirathi to Gangotri. It has apple orchards planted from Wilson's 1860s stock, a Bhotiya village at Bagori, deodar the size of church columns, and - because it lay inside the restricted inner line for most of the last century - remarkably little of what has happened to the rest of the hills.
We would rather tell you the truth about one property in one valley than write a brochure that could describe anywhere in the state.
What we will always tell you
If the hot water only runs in the mornings, we will say so before you book, not after. If a room sits above the kitchen and you will smell breakfast at six, we will tell you which one it is. And if the cheaper room is the one that suits you, we will put you in it - a full house of the right guests is worth more to us than one upsold night.
A word about the valley
The Bhagirathi valley is a working Himalayan landscape, not a resort. Roads close. Weather turns. Conditions here change from month to month, and we would rather you called and asked than trusted a page written last season. The status line at the top of this site carries a date on it for exactly that reason.
