Short answer: Pack in layers for Harsil in every season - nights are cold even in June at 2,620 m. Bring a warm jacket, a rain shell, good walking shoes, your ID and any permits or yatra registration, medicines, and enough cash for the whole stay. Fuel, ATMs and shops are unreliable beyond Uttarkashi.

Summer (May-June)
- Light layers for the day; a fleece or light jacket for evenings.
- Cap and sun protection.
- Comfortable clothes for temple visits.
Autumn (September-November)
- A proper warm jacket - nights fall to low single digits by October and near freezing in November.
- Thermal base layer for November.
- Gloves and a warm cap for early starts to Gangotri.
Winter (December-February)
- Thermals, down jacket, woollen cap, gloves and warm socks.
- Waterproof boots with good grip for ice.
- Extra days' worth of medicines - the road can close after snow. See Harsil in winter.
Monsoon (July-August)
We advise against travelling in the monsoon. If you must, carry full rain gear and leave several spare days for landslide delays. See Harsil weather by month.
For treks and day trips
- Daypack, water bottle and purification, snacks.
- Trekking poles for Gaumukh, Kedartal or Dodital.
- Extra warm layer - it is always colder higher up.
