When does it snow in Harsil?

Snow is not guaranteed on any given date. In most years the first proper fall lands in the second half of December, the valley floor stays white through January, and February brings the deepest cover. Early March can still bring fresh snow. If seeing snow is the whole point of the trip, January and early February are the safest bet.

Is the road to Harsil open in winter?

The Gangotri highway as far as Harsil is kept open for most of the winter because people and the army live here year-round. After a heavy fall, though, the stretch above Uttarkashi can be blocked until it is cleared, which may take a day or longer. Beyond Harsil the road towards Gangotri is closed for the season. Plan a buffer day at each end and do not book a train or flight home for the morning after you leave.

Drive only in daylight, carry chains or hire a local driver who has them, and check the position the day before you set off. Our how to reach Harsil guide has the distances and realistic drive times.

What is open in Harsil in winter?

Much less than in summer. Many guesthouses and dhabas close between December and March, and fuel, cash and supplies are best sorted in Uttarkashi. Some hotels stay open with heating and hot water - always confirm both before you book, not on arrival.

What can you do in Harsil in winter?

  • Walk the snow-covered orchards and the deodar forest along the Bhagirathi.
  • Cross to Mukhba village, where the goddess Ganga spends the winter after the Gangotri temple closes.
  • Photograph the valley at sunrise - winter air is the clearest of the year.
  • Do very little, by a heater, with a view. That is most of the appeal.

Gangotri, Gartang Gali and the high treks are not options in deep winter.

What to pack

  • Thermal base layers, a down jacket, warm cap and gloves.
  • Waterproof boots with grip - lanes and steps ice over.
  • Any medicines you need, plus cash for the whole stay.
