Short answer: Delhi to Harsil is roughly 480 km by road via Haridwar, Rishikesh and Uttarkashi. Plan it over two days: Delhi to Rishikesh or Dehradun on day one (5-6 hours), then on to Harsil on day two (8-10 hours), or break the mountain section at Uttarkashi. Where to break the journey
- Two-day plan (recommended): Night in Rishikesh, Haridwar or Dehradun. Leave at first light for Harsil.
- Relaxed plan: Night in Uttarkashi, then a short morning drive to Harsil. Best for families and first-timers in the hills.
- Overnight bus or train: Reach Rishikesh or Haridwar early, then a taxi or shared jeep onward.
Driving tips for the mountain stretch
- Do the stretch beyond Uttarkashi in daylight only.
- Fill fuel and draw cash in Uttarkashi - options thin out after it.
- Expect delays from road works, landslide clearance and yatra traffic. Do not plan by distance.
- Avoid July and August, when monsoon landslides close the road. See Harsil weather by month.
- In yatra season, keep your Char Dham registration ready for checkpoints - see Gangotri yatra registration.
