Short answer: When Gangotri temple closes on Annakut, the day after Diwali, the idol of Goddess Ganga is carried in a decorated palanquin (doli) down to her winter home at Mukhba, across the river from Harsil, with a night halt at Markandeya on the way. In spring the journey reverses: the doli leaves Mukhba the day before Akshaya Tritiya, halts overnight at Bhairon Ghati, and reaches Gangotri for the opening. Army bands and local dhol-damau drummers accompany it.

Why the goddess comes to Mukhba
Gangotri, at about 3,100 m, is snowbound for half the year. For centuries the priests of Gangotri have come from Mukhba, a village on the slope across the Bhagirathi from Harsil, and that is where the goddess spends the winter. Through the cold months, worship continues at the Ganga temple in Mukhba, so pilgrims who come out of season can still have darshan.
The closing journey
On Annakut the temple doors are closed after special prayers, and the idol is placed in the doli. The procession walks down past Bhairon Ghati to the valley, with army pipe bands playing and villagers joining along the way. After a night at Markandeya, the goddess is carried up to Mukhba and enshrined for the winter.
The opening journey
In spring the doli leaves Mukhba on the day before Akshaya Tritiya, stops overnight at the Bhairon temple at Bhairon Ghati, and walks on to Gangotri the next morning, where the temple doors open to begin the yatra season.
